Natural Resources & Environment Mgt

Living Earth Uganda (LEU) is and has been a key player in environmental conservation and natural resource management since its establishment in 1999. As a registered and licensed non-governmental organization, LEU is dedicated to promoting awareness and skill development in environmental management. The organization encourages communities and stakeholders to transform sustainable ideas into practical action.

LEU’s work centers on public education in ecology, natural history, and resource conservation. The organization actively engages in protecting and restoring natural resources while fostering a deeper appreciation for the environment. LEU’s initiatives include equipping communities with the knowledge and tools needed for effective natural resources and environment management where waste management is among the focus for communities. This includes promoting alternative energy sources like fuel briquettes made from waste and supporting plastic recycling as a viable business. Through its vocational training programs, LEU empowers communities to adopt sustainable practices, contributing to the conservation and restoration of Uganda’s natural beauty and resources.

Livelihood Programs

The Livelihood Program at Living Earth Uganda (LEU) is dedicated to empowering vulnerable communities, particularly women and youth, by providing essential skills and resources to establish sustainable businesses. Through this program, LEU facilitates the organization of these communities into groups and enterprises, offering training in areas such as agriculture, waste management, energy-saving technologies, business entrepreneurship development, markets and market linkages, functional skills training, and more.

The program aims to enhance economic self-sufficiency by linking participants with apprenticeship and internship opportunities, enabling them to gain practical experience. Additionally, LEU supports these groups in accessing and utilizing government interventions and other available resources, ensuring that they are well-positioned to improve their livelihoods.

By fostering partnerships with public and private sectors, LEU not only strengthens the capacity of these enterprises but also promotes the sustainable use of local resources. This approach ensures that communities can generate income, create employment opportunities, and contribute to environmental stewardship, all while improving their living standards.

Humanitarian Programs

Living Earth Uganda (LEU) is deeply committed to enhancing the well-being of vulnerable communities through its comprehensive Humanitarian Program. This program focuses on addressing critical needs in areas such as food distribution for displaced, water, sanitation, hygiene, and nutrition, particularly in underserved regions.

LEU works closely with communities to improve hygiene practices, waste management, and overall sanitation. This includes mobilizing community efforts to ensure the proper use of sanitation facilities, promoting recycling practices, and fostering a clean and healthy environment. The program not only addresses immediate health concerns but also provides communities with the tools to sustain these improvements over time.

In addition to environmental health initiatives, LEU’s Humanitarian Program also includes components of livelihood support, where communities are trained to generate income through recycling and waste management. This dual approach ensures that humanitarian aid is not only about providing immediate relief but also about empowering communities to create lasting change.

By linking these humanitarian efforts with broader socio-economic development, LEU ensures that communities are not only surviving but thriving, with the resources and skills needed to build a better future.

Women & Youth Empowerment

Living Earth Uganda (LEU) places a strong emphasis on empowering women and youth as a core component of its mission. Through targeted programs, LEU works to equip these groups with the skills, resources, and support necessary to build sustainable livelihoods and actively participate in the socio-economic development of their communities.

LEU’s empowerment initiatives include organizing women and youth into groups and enterprises, providing them with training in various skills such as agriculture, energy-saving technologies, and waste management. Additionally, the program offers opportunities for internships, apprenticeships, and hands-on experience, helping participants to gain practical knowledge and improve their economic prospects.

The organization also plays a crucial role in raising awareness and mobilizing these groups to take advantage of government programs and other interventions. By building strong networks and fostering partnerships with the public and private sectors, LEU ensures that women and youth are not only skilled but also empowered to become leaders and change-makers within their communities.

Through these efforts, LEU is committed to creating a more equitable and inclusive society where women and youth have the opportunity to thrive

Skills Training

Living Earth Uganda (LEU) is dedicated to providing essential skills training that empowers communities, particularly women and youth, by enhancing their capacities to engage in sustainable livelihoods. Our skills training programs are comprehensive and both formal and informal (tailored hands on skilling) working in partnerships with vocational institutions. Skilling offered includes tailoring, hairdressing, fabrication and wielding plumbing, mechanics of vehicles, motorcycles, phones among others. Functional skilling in agriculture, energy-saving technologies, and waste management is also offered. These programs are designed not just to impart technical skills, but also to organize participants into groups and enterprises, enabling them to access additional resources and opportunities.

For example, our training in agriculture equips individuals with the knowledge to improve their productivity through embracing sustainable practices but also Post harvest handling practices and the needed equipment/tools . Similarly, our programs on energy-saving technologies, offer practical skills that contribute to environmental conservation while providing participants with a source of income.

Additionally , the technical training, empowers participants with the necessary knowledge and tools to sustain and expand their enterprises. LEU further organizes beneficiaries into strong, cohesive groups that can tap into further training opportunities and government programs, such as those focused on youth and women’s empowerment.

Our approach ensures that participants are not only skilled but also supported in applying these skills to create lasting, positive changes in their communities. By linking training with practical, income-generating activities, LEU fosters both personal and community growth, contributing to a healthier, more sustainable environment for all.

Water, Sanitation & Hygiene

At Living Earth Uganda, our commitment to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) is a cornerstone of our vision for a healthier and more sustainable future. We believe that access to clean water and proper sanitation is fundamental to improving quality of life and fostering community well-being.

Our WASH initiatives are designed to tackle pressing issues and bring about lasting change. In the realm of waste management, we’ve implemented innovative practices that emphasize the importance of recycling and sorting waste. By doing so, we not only enhance community hygiene but also create valuable economic opportunities. Our efforts help transform waste into resources, partnering with recycling plants to generate income and employment for local residents.

Sanitation is another key focus of our work. We’re dedicated to improving sanitation facilities across communities, from constructing and maintaining toilets to promoting their effective use. This ensures that waste is disposed of safely and helps to reduce the spread of disease.

Education is at the heart of our approach. Through extensive sensitization, education/training, and awareness campaigns, we empower communities with knowledge about hygiene practices such as handwashing and safe water use. These efforts are vital in preventing illness and promoting a healthier lifestyle.

At Living Earth Uganda, we understand that addressing water, sanitation, and hygiene issues is not just about providing facilities—it’s about creating sustainable change and enhancing the quality of life for everyone. Our work in this area is a testament to our dedication to building a cleaner, healthier, and more prosperous future for all.
