In northern Uganda, this critical initiative unfolded to provide emergency livelihood support to 2,250 vulnerable households, comprising refugees and host community members in the Palorinya refugee settlement, Moyo district, and the Imvepi refugee settlement, Arua district. The “Emergency Livelihood Support Through Cash For Work” project aimed to address the urgent needs of these communities through structured cash-for-work activities.
The project’s overall objective was to deliver immediate financial relief and livelihood support to these vulnerable groups. Specifically, it sought to provide emergency livelihood support, strengthen the resilience of refugees and host community members, and aid host communities in coping with and recovering from the impacts of the large influx of refugees. Moreover, it aimed to invest in national and local systems to ensure they could adequately serve both host and refugee communities and respond to the life-saving livelihood needs of these populations.
The project undertook various activities to achieve these goals. It provided non-farming livelihood support through cash-for-work programs, which offered immediate financial relief while engaging beneficiaries in productive activities. These activities not only provided income but also built community resilience and improved infrastructure, benefiting both refugees and host community members.
By supporting these vulnerable households, the project aimed to create a stable and sustainable environment where refugees and host communities could coexist and thrive. The cash-for-work approach allowed participants to earn a living while contributing to the development and maintenance of their communities. This dual approach ensured that while immediate needs were met, the groundwork was laid for long-term recovery and resilience.
Through sustained effort and collaboration, the “Emergency Livelihood Support Through Cash For Work” project played a crucial role in stabilizing the lives of thousands of vulnerable individuals, providing them with the means to support themselves and their families, and fostering a sense of community and shared purpose in the face of adversity.
