Mungurike and Oringi’s Story of Growth and Hope

Mungurike Janet, spouse of Oringi Denis, stands in awe as two adorable goat kids make their debut on their Ngwedo farm, nestled in the Buliisa district. These delightful offspring, sired by a boer buck, bring immense joy to Janet’s heart, while her husband focuses on peeling the cassava they have diligently cultivated.

This bountiful cassava harvest, stemming from the NAROCAs variety, owes its presence to the unwavering support of Living Earth Uganda (LEU) through an empowering agricultural assistance initiative.

Their remarkable journey commenced amidst the tumultuous shifts caused by oil and gas advancements, which razed their once-thriving gardens in Buliisa. The haunting specter of recovering from the loss of staple crops like cassava and maize loomed large.

However, a ray of hope emerged from LEU’s comprehensive training sessions, delivering both solutions and renewed optimism. Today, the fruits of their labor have materialized as flourishing cassava crops, accompanied by the heartening birth of four goat kids in a span of less than twelve months.

With a gleam of optimism, Mungurike proclaims, “The swift proliferation of our goat population instills a newfound confidence in our ability to provide for our children’s education, even in these trying times of escalating costs.” She reflects on the fact that, until now, their family had never hinged their livelihood on goat husbandry.

Yet, the astonishing multiplication rate of the goats (giving birth to 2 to 3 kids at once), coupled with their potential market value (estimated at 500,000 Ugandan shillings or more), has prompted a profound reconsideration of their income sources.
Aided by the generous support of Total Uganda, Mungurike, Oringi, and their fellow community members underwent comprehensive training encompassing the holistic management of diverse endeavors, spanning from cultivating crops to nurturing livestock.

This transformative journey formed an integral part of an expansive agricultural support services project. As they cast their gaze upon their thriving farmstead and the burgeoning goat herd, a sense of gratitude overwhelms their hearts, borne from the newfound opportunities that have reshaped the trajectory of their lives.
