Thriving Livestock Transformation in Kyebagila Village

In a remarkable tale of agricultural transformation, the introduction of a high-breed Boer buck by Living Earth Uganda (LEU) has catalyzed a surge in livestock crossbreeding and economic prospects for Kyebagila Village residents.

It all began with the Boer buck’s impressive physique and robust build, delivered to Kalibagwa’s homestead by LEU. This sight inspired Robert Bahangamaiso, a Kyebagila resident, to explore crossbreeding for his own livestock.

Despite lacking experience, Bahangamaiso’s determination grew as he witnessed his neighbors’ crossbred goats thrive. In just six months, their energetic and sturdy triplets fueled his enthusiasm to crossbreed his own goats. Eliab Kunyumizibwa, another villager, joined in after witnessing the remarkable success, proudly sharing how crossbreeding led to healthier, faster-growing kids.

With LEU’s guidance, the idea behind introducing the Boer buck was clear—empower villagers like Bahangamaiso and Kunyumizibwa to enhance their livestock quality. This led to a wave of community members adopting crossbreeding to elevate their herds.

A groundbreaking initiative supported by Total Energies Uganda is set to distribute 1607 Mubende breed goats and Boer bucks to those impacted by the Tilenga project’s oil and gas developments. This effort, known as the Agricultural Support Services Project, promises a positive transformation for local agriculture.

Dr. Polly Nagaba, LEU’s esteemed livestock specialist, explains their approach: they provide Mubende local breeds and Boer bucks for crossbreeding, resulting in hardy hybrids that resist diseases and adapt to the local environment. This strategy caters to small-scale farmers’ needs and resources.

The Kyebagila Village tale stands as a testament to the profound effects of strategic crossbreeding. What began with curiosity about the Boer buck’s potential has evolved into a movement, empowering villagers to cultivate robust, resilient livestock. This not only enriches their livelihoods but also fosters collective prosperity within the community
